Air

To build upwards, in the air

Quintessentially constructing is visualized as the realization of buildings and structures that develop upwards, projecting themselves in height, in the air. Initially imprisoned in scaffolds (made of wood in the past, metal nowadays) that support those who build in height, buildings grow by degrees, by levels, until the roof is finished and the workmen put a branch on top of it as a symbol of their goal.

Weight lifting

Many construction works are and have been affected by the performances of the lifting machines, and thus they are linked to technological innovations in the field, from cranes to airships and helicopters employed nowadays.

Skyscrapers

Although they are almost absent in our cities in Friuli, skyscrapers with tens and tens of levels and a structure of concrete, glass and steel mark out the skyline of many large cities all over the world. Collavino Construction of Mario Collavino, mason and entrepreneur who had moved to Canada from Muris di Ragogna (in Friuli), was appointed to build the Freedom Tower on Ground Zero, New York.

A bridge... before the bridge

Among scaffoldings, centering is a very ancient method which consists of a temporary structure that allows to build an arch, a bridge, a vault, over an empty space, to join two banks. As an interesting intermediate work, the centering is a prelude to a bridge. It was originally wooden, but it can be made of metal or reinforced concrete depending on the requirements of the project.

The construction of the bridge over Lumiei creek: a “spider’s” job

In order to realize the bridge over Lumiei creek, between Sauris and Ampezzo (North Friuli, during the ‘30s), the firm Nigris from Ampezzo bought (and structurally modified) the centering that years before had been used to build the stone bridge for the Predil railway, near Salcano - in Slovenia nowadays. “When rope bridges are ready, on both riversides we start simultaneously to assemble the trusses of the centering, which have previously been cut, perforated, numbered on a flat open space and then taken to the building site - already tested, complete with iron slabs, bolts etc., so that they can be layed simply by screwing the nuts, with no need of adjustment with the use of an axe or agitation, totally incompatible with such a spider’s work. And here is the impressive -we should say miraculous - work of carpentry” (Arduino Berlan, from Vie d’Italia, Touring Club Italiano, 1934).
