The Museum of Construction Heritage
Why a Museum about building yards, craft and specializations in construction? To support the memory of the building tradition in Friuli, with its manifold and multifaceted nature.

Cantîrs

The name Cantîrs (“building yard”) has been chosen for the idea of dynamism it recalls, which represents a project and a work in progress. Just like in a construction yard, documentary research proceeds by stages, widening its plan thanks to research and gradually adding plans as documents and information are gathered and catalogued. Cantîrs deals with materials (iron and concrete, lime, wood, bricks...), know-how and techniques, works, firms and workers, symbolic elements, social relationships, customs and practice linked to the transmission of a knowledge shaped around construction through the years.

People

People who in different ways take part in building yard activities (bricklayers, builders, workers, clerks, artisans, surveyors, architects and engineers) will be the centre of attention.

Anonimity

The task is to give visibility to single persons, in the aim to recover an individual dimension within the anonymity that surrounds many actions, jobs and stages of construction.
The mission of the Museum
The aim of the Museum is to investigate and document the heritage of technical knowledge and folk memory about building activity which is unknown to most people, even among insiders who know technical and practical issues of their professional history, but ignore many equally important social and cultural implications. From this viewpoint knowledge, local traditions and social values among builders of the area deserve investigation and explanation through the collection of documents, reminders, images, accounts and objects in order to preserve a story worth telling, especially to the new generations which are approaching the working world now.

The Museum deals with:

People, moving around the works, yards and places from which and to which migrate.
Work, between pragmatism and ritual routine.
Construction know-how, surreptitiously observing and imitating the elderly or the learned at school.
Working conditions, from today’s safety rules to yesterday’s patron saints and ex voto.
Organization: guilds, workers societies, labour unions, trade associations.
Specialized know-how regarding territory, resources, technological evolution, forgotten jobs.
Construction activity, an action and a concept which have produced metaphors and symbols, that common sense together with philosophy and art have always looked at.
We look for traces, elements, proofs and examples of this intangible charm.
The worksite is open.



La Cassa Edile ha prodotto per il Museo un Documentario sull’edilizia friulana dal titolo:

A portata di mano.
Volti, luoghi, storie del mestiere.

Realizzato da Nikam Immagine Video, Udine (2014), a cura di Paolo Comuzzi, Andrea Trangoni, Sabrina Tonutti. Il documentario si articola in una serie di video-interviste a lavoratori, imprenditori edili, insegnanti e Direttori di istituti aventi a che fare con l’edilizia friulana. Le tematiche più salienti affrontate sono: la trasmissione del sapere di mestiere ai giovani; come è cambiato il settore edile nel giro di mezzo secolo; l’emigrazione in edilizia; l’evoluzione tecnologica e normativa; storie personali di mestiere; storia delle fornaci; edilizia idraulica; la lavorazione della pietra; il mosaico; la prefabbricazione; tecniche e materiali in edilizia. Oltre alla video-interviste il documentario propone riprese video realizzate ad hoc e una ricca selezione di materiale filmico/fotografico d’archivio.
